Hearing God’s Word for Today
Far be it from me to have an idle mind. You know, since it’s the devil’s workshop and all. How effortlessly our minds wander to fears, anxieties, and what-ifs! One scroll through social media or, heaven forbid, watching one segment of the ten o’clock news will have your mind fixed on everything disheartening. So, how are we, as competent humans, busy with careers, family, parenting, homemaking, spouse-ing (if you’ll allow me to make up a word)…supposed to think about “such things” (Phil 4:3)? Jesus called us to be in the world but not of the world, but, lo and behold, here we are, helpless earthlings in a constant battle to be both hearers and doers of the Word.
While I may not always carve out time in my crazy day to stop in solitude for peace, quiet, and spiritual nourishment (**I’m working on this!), that doesn’t mean I must be deprived of a fresh serving of God’s Word for today. I don’t have to stop or carve out a spare moment to listen to something! Listening to sermons and audio programs that feed my soul keep me going. I listen while doing housework, cooking, putting on my makeup (as rare as that may be), and driving (this happens to be one of my favorites since we are in the car oh so much). And, as easy as that, I hear hand-picked audio that helps to fix my mind on greater things than what I just saw on Facebook. Discovering the One Place App has been a literal game-changer for me (thanks, Mom!). A quick download will equip you to hear pertinent and meaningful truths on-demand and hear God’s word for today! Here are some of my favorite broadcasts:
James Dobson’s Family Talk
I’m pretty sure James Dobson is God’s actual gift to every parent on the planet. Okay, maybe every human. This man is so wise and such a godly influence of the past couple generations. He will undoubtedly be fighting for family values until the day God calls him home. I have learned SO. MUCH. from this man and the experts he has on his program. I’ve read several of Dobson’s books on family and parenting, and he still does a radio program every single day on current and relevant topics for families. I love that it’s not just about the Bible itself, but rather discussions on current events from a Christian perspective. Real life issues, real people’s struggles. I listen on the One Place app, where I can find his program, browse through various topics, and choose one that applies to where I am in my life, my week, or my day.
Focus on the Family with Jim Daly
Another daily program that is similar to Family Talk is Focus on the Family. This program offers a conservative world-view from experts on matters relevant in today’s culture and family. I also enjoy listening to Focus on the Family on the One Place App because of its ease of use and ability to quickly find a topic that interests me. I can always find at least one! I have been educated on so many topics I would never have known I needed to know thanks to this program. I am enlightened every time I turn it on.
A New Beginning with Greg Laurie
Greg Laurie is the pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in CA. You can listen to his insightful and easy to understand sermons on One Place, as well. His humor and unique accent are a pleasure to listen to. He is an evangelical with a no-holds-barred attitude. He tells it like it is and calls you to be the best you can be! He doesn’t come from a squeaky clean background and his real-world perspective is refreshing. This is my husband’s most frequented program on One Place!
Daily Hope with Rick Warren
Author of Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren, is the pastor of Saddleback Church in CA. His sermons are easy on the ears and challenging to your heart. He connects with his audience by using humor and a completely relatable spirit. He presents biblical truths that everybody needs to hear. He hasn’t walked an easy road in life, yet he has managed to find faith in every step of his journey. And, you guessed it, this one is on the One Place App, as well.
If you’re like me, listening to God’s word for today will NOT be without interruptions. You may have to pause it 32 times to yell at kids, feed the husband, and hose down a messy baby (#life), but it will always be waiting for you when you are ready! There are other broadcasts, podcasts, and apps (your own church may have one!) for you to feed your spirit throughout your busy day. If you have a favorite, please share it in the comments!
