Our Journey to Clean Eating

December 8, 2017

Our Journey to Clean Eating

Since I quit working outside the home and made it my life’s mission to be a good little housewife and SAHM, I was bombarded with the realization that so much of the “food” I was feeding my family wasn’t actually nutritious. No, I wasn’t trying to be perfect, nor was I driving through McDonald’s or buying Twinkies. But, growing up in the 80s and 90s (the peak of the convenience-food generation), I was just never conditioned to think much about what I was putting into my body. Clean eating wasn’t really on my radar.

I’m not sure what put me into overdrive, but I discovered Lisa Leake’s 100 Days of Real Food blog and was instantly hooked. I stalked her blog then ordered her cookbooks and could hardly put them down. I pored over the chapters she dedicated to educating her readers on untruths and misconceptions we are led to believe about food. By Lisa’s recommendation, I snagged Michael Pollan’s book, Food Rules, at a Half-Price Books for about six bucks and read it in one sitting. Literally. (It really is a quick and easy read.) I have been on one mission ever since: REAL FOOD ONLY. VIEW POST

Bring Your Family Closer Together: The Importance of Family Dinner

October 4, 2017

Family Dinner is More Important Than You Think

No family is exempt from the hustle and bustle of the busy weekday grind. Whether both parents work outside the home or not, school (at home or away), work, housework, babies, kids, homework, sports, and all other things often stand in the way of slowing down for a meal shared with those you love the most. The benefits of gathering around the table and eating dinner as a family are nothing short of phenomenal. The research is almost unexplainable, but undeniably in favor of taking a short pause from the busyness of life and breaking bread together.

The Facts

As parents, we all desire a positive personal relationship with our children. Would you believe this is a reported side-effect of eating dinner together as a family? According to The Family Dinner Project, benefits reported are higher academic achievement, less chance of risky behaviors like drugs, sex, and drinking, less incidence of obesity, fewer behavioral and emotional problems, and healthier, less picky eaters! Achieving these goals that we all have for our children by simply prioritizing family dinner is more than worth it, don’t ya think? VIEW POST

Making the Most of Family Meal Time

October 4, 2017

How to Make an Ordinary Family Meal Really Fun!

If you’ve seen my post on the staggering importance of family dinners, you know it’s a priority worth fighting for. But, how do you make the most of your family meal together? Shared mealtimes should be cherished and looked forward to by each member of the family: kids, teens, and grown-ups! Family dinners around our table are usually full of fun, laughter, silliness, and sometimes a dose of God’s Word. (Okay…and maybe an occasional stern voice from Dad reminding everyone to settle down and actually EAT!)
